Dr Isabel Hyman

Malacologist, BSc (Adv) (Hons), PhD

I am a biologist specialising in the study of land slugs and snails. I spend a lot of my time describing
land snail biodiversity and studying the relationships between species, and I also have a passion for land snail conservation. I am based at the Australian Museum Research Institute, and my research is funded by grants from the Australian Biological Resources Study, the Australian Museum Foundation, and National Geographic.

When I’m not snailing, another passion of mine is music. I am the Musical Director of the Challis
Singers, which I founded in 2012, and also perform with and write music for vocal quartet Sass & Grit
and Celtic folk group Adder’s Fork. You can find out more about these groups, and my solo material, on the Music page.

Why Snails?

This is the first question that I am asked by many people when they find out that I’m a snail biologist.
Well, I hope I can convince you that there are many, many excellent reasons for my fascination with
these tiny creatures!
